What’s up guys, Sully here owner of BombTech Golf in Williston, Vermont. I was actually going through some of our old blog posts, we just relaunched our website. I was reading through this blog I wrote, don’t get lost in the blog term, called the American Nightmare. It was essentially my story of how I got fired from my day job when BombTech was just a side hustle. I don’t know if everyone knows this, but I feel like everyone does. I think it is an interesting story if you do not know.

I am going to mess up all the years, I think it was 2013 I was working as a sales director for an engineering firm in Randolph. I was making good money, killing it, had a one-hour commute like a lot of you guys out there working 9 to 5 with a one-hour commute. I would leave at I think 7:30, I would go, comeback, get home at 6 or 7 every single night. Didn’t really think anything of it, was working the grind, BombTech was just a side hustle. I was selling like a hundred clubs a month, pretty minimal. It was starting to pick, and I thought about BombTech all the time it was my obsession, but I worked hard every day. I actually found out my wife was pregnant, and this was at the same time my boss said why don’t you come with me. So he brings me into his office, it was on a Monday, so I drove all the way down to Randolph which was an hour away. He goes let’s have a chat, I go come in my office what do you want to chat about? He goes no, no, no come down with me. He walks me down to the HR office and he goes today is your last day and your last paycheck was last week.

If you guys know me I am pretty well tempered, but I had to go get water, so I told him listen, I am going to go get some water, so I don’t knock you out. So I went got a glass of water, took a deep breathe I said alright I am getting fired, last paycheck last week is not cool. So I sat back down and said, what is my job? He goes to sell. I go what are sales and our sales are doubled. I go so how didn’t I do my job? It didn’t matter I was performing, we were killing it, I grew the company a ton for them. Didn’t matter you are being let go, so you need to leave. I go well you can either physically remove me or pay me all my commissions and what you owe me. They decided based off that to pay me what I was do.

They paid me, and I got home early from work, which I was never early. The wife was like what are you doing home? I told her, well I got fired. She’s like are you going to this BombTech thing full time? That was the kick in the a** I need to make the commitment to make BombTech Golf happen. It was from a side hustle and I will never look at a job the same way and I will probably never be able to work for someone again. I thank that person, well not really, I am glad it happened because it really was what I needed to allow for this to all go down. It’s just a crazy story and I can’t believe it actually happened and I will tell you what. I had my first kid on the way, was recently fired and it was not yet full time. I used to work 20 hours a day, 7 days a week and I just want to thank you guys out there for listening to this story. As well for every single golfer for taking a chance and pulled the pin and supported BombTech Golf and myself. It is an amazingly competitive world and it’s only because of you guys that I have been able to go from fired and a kid on the way and a side hustle. To a full time thing where we have sold over 150,000 golf clubs. Blows my mind every day, not every day is easy. I work my a** off, everyone does, and I just want to say thank you guys. I appreciate it and hit that subscribe button, pull the pin!

Sincerely,

Tyler “Sully” Sullivan

  • I had a similar experience and a somewhat similar decision, starting my own business, while my family was growing. It’s hair raising. You’re doing an amazing joband love the clubs!

  • Sully, I met you and your wife at the Boston golf show on 2014. You let me try three different drivers and shafts.I picked one out (senior) and now have two drivers, two three woods and the rescue clubs. I can’t hit it as far as I used to but I keep it in the fairway 95% of the time. Glad to have met you and read about your story
Lots of luck for the future.

  • You did it! You fired your boss and became an entrepreneur! You had greatness in you all along. You just never realized it. I love success stories like yours! I get some funny comments from some of my golf friends with the name BombTech or Grenade, but when they hear the sound, Boom!! all smiles. Keep it going!

  • Nice story. Seems like a daily occurrence from so-called leadership. Thank goodness side hustles pay off. Your supporting wife is a treasure. Clubs are fantastic. I own them all and intermix them throughout my four sets depending on the course. the key to your success is obviously quality product, but it goes further. Your personality, your communications, your customer service and I’d rather deal with people exactly like me and my friends. Heat job and congrats. Thanks for taking that risk!

  • Sully, Great story! Reminds me of myself 33 years ago, when I started my own business. I have your driver and wedges. Very satisfied! Fellow golfers, want to know where I got my driver as I’am hitting it farther and straighter than before. Word of mouth will get you more business. Keep it up!!
